2025-06-19 16:16 <br/> Tags: #AmericanJewry #trade #oil #Intel #people ![[image-13.png]] # Marc Rich (1934-2013) - Marc Rich, was one of the most prolific commodities traders of all time. - Rich used his private wealth and power to benefit international Jewry and the state of Israel. - Rich was born in Antwerp Belgium in 1934. - Antwerp has historically been the center for European Jewry. - When Rich was born, Antwerp ran 80% of the world diamond business, and 90% of the Antwerp diamond industry was Jewish run. ### Rich's Father - After fleeing Europe, Rich's father, David, becomes a successful jeweler in the mid west. - David rich relocated to Manhattan and became a US Military contractor supplying burlap bags (Melrose Bag and Burlap Company) to the army during the Korean war. ### Jewish Start - At the age of 19 Rich, with his fathers Jewish connections, gets a job at Phillip Brothers commodities trading firm in NY. - Phillip Brothers was founded by two Jews in 1901. The company was a Jewish 'club.' - Hiring was done mostly by personal connections, typical of Jewish business practice. - Rich is sent all over the world, trading commodities with dozens of governments. - While at Phillip Brothers, Rich forms connections with power players and regimes across the world. ### Oil - Before 1970 Oil was not traded freely like other commodities. - A fixed price was set in advance and the oil producing nations sold to a handful of big oil companies. - The [[1967 Six Day War]] and the ensuing oil embargo create a crack in the oil market. This crack opens the path to the eventual "spot market" where the oil price is always fluid, no longer sold at a fixed price. - The [[1973 Yom Kippur War]] and its historic ensuing embargo radically inflate the price of crude oil. - From 1948-1970 oil price was stable at ~$3.00/barrel after the 73' embargo prices got as high as $12. - 1971-1973 a wave of oil nationalization occurs: Algeria, Libya, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi, Abu Dhabi, Iran. ### Business - Rich left Phillip Brothers in 1974 and founds Marc Rich + Co AG. (now named Glencore) in Switzerland. - Rich makes huge profits in the oil shortages of the 70s. He primarily bought Iranian oil. - Beginning in 1973 Rich became a major supplier of oil to Israel. - After the [[Iranian Revolution]] in 1979, Rich's strong contacts enable him to keep doing business with Iran. After the revolution in Iran, Rich continues to buy Iranian oil and sell it to Israel. - Israel had been secretly working with Iran under the Shah from 1956-79. - In 1956 Israel built a secret pipeline from Eilat at the southern point of Israel on the Gulf of Aqaba, through Beersheba in the Negev desert, and ending at Ashkelon on the Mediterranean coast. Rich's connections in Iran become Mossad connections in Iran. ### Criminal Case *(I will not go in depth on Rich's case because its not relevant to this project.)* - The brief rundown is that in 1983 Rudy Giuliani and Sandy Weinberg in New York indict Rich on spurious tax evasion charges. - They bolstered their case by revealing and admonishing Rich's "trading with the enemy," his dealings with Iran. - The Iran dealings continued while Americans were held hostage during the 1979-80 Iran hostage crisis. - For this Rich faced his only ever conviction - the court of public opinion, which arguably fueled his legal tax cases going for nearly 20 years. - Rich flees to Switzerland and never returns. - For 17 years the feds are after him concocting wild plots to capture him. - During his exile Rich continues his businesses. ### The Important Parts - Rich's security is ran by former Mossad agent [[Avner Azulay]]. - Rich was a pioneer of 20th century economic globalization and free trade. - Rich funds multiple Mossad operations involving Jewish Immigration. - Rich provides Israel intel on the 'high risk countries' he does business in. - Rich becomes an Israeli citizen in 1984. - Rich was a large donor to Jewish organization while being an international fugitive: - [[Birthright Israel]] - $5 million founding donation ~1999-2001 - [[ADL]] - $250,000 cumulative donations - [[Jerusalem Foundation]] - Rich was connected to the elite Jewish [[Mega Group]] though [[Michael Steinhardt]], one of its prominent members. - Rich first met Steinhardt in the 1970s. - Steinhardt managed some of Rich's money and investments beginning in the early 1980s. - Steinhardt is reported to have leaned on his fellow Mega Group members like [[Edgar Bronfman Sr.]] to lobby on Rich's behalf regarding his legal cases. - [[Scooter Libby]] among Rich's vocal defenders. - Rich was forced to sell his 50% stake in 20th Century Fox as part of case.
