# Sanford "Sandy" Weill (1933-)
- Sanford Weill is an American Jewish financier, and banking executive.
- Weill was most notably CEO of Citigroup from 1998-2003.
- *Weill's leadership of Citigroup was the result of a four decade twisted financial saga documented in considerable brevity below.*
#### Weill and Finance
- Weill began his career in 1955 at the investment bank [[Bear Stearns]].
- *Bear Stearns* later collapsed in the 2008 financial crisis.
- After spending a year at *Bear Stearns*, Weill joined the firm *Burnham & Co*.
- Weill spent 1956-1960 at Burnham before starting his own ventures.
- *Burnham & Co*. later merged with the firm *Drexel*, which later merged again to form [[Drexel Burnham Lambert]].
- In 1960 Weill began his own series of brokerage firms beginning with *Carter, Berlind, & Weill*.
- After a series of acquisitions and mergers, Weill's firm *Hayden Stone, Inc*., merged with the older but ailing firm Shearson, becoming *Shearson Hayden Stone*.
- The firm continued under the umbrella name Shearson.
- Shearson was sold to *American Express* in 1981 for ~$930 million. Weill became president of *American Express* until he left in 1985.
- In 1986 Weill partnered with Jewish banking executive Peter Cohen to buy *Commercial Credit*, a subsidiary of *Control Data Corp.*, for $7 billion.
- At the time Peter Cohen was chief executive of *Shearson Lehman American Express*. *[[Lehman Brothers]] had been acquired by American Express in 1984 and organized with the Shearson family of firms. *
- Weill stripped *Commercial Credit*, fired staff, took it public in 1987, and used it as a vehicle to acquire several financial companies.
- The sum of the *Commercial Credit* acquisitions resulted in the formation of *Primerica*.
- *Primerica* acquired *Travelers Insurance Corporation* in 1993 and adopted the name *Travelers Inc*.
- *Travelers Inc.* soon became [[Travelers Group]].
- *Travelers Group*, like all of these firms, was its own large umbrella of many separate but related financial entities.
- In 1997 Weill, via *Travelers Group*, acquired [[Salomon Brothers]], one of the largest investment banks at the time.
- *Salomon Brothers* was merged with another *Travelers Group* firm called *Smith Barney* to form the second largest securities firm in the world *Salomon Smith Barney*.
- *Salomon Smith Barney* continued its operations out of *Salomon Brothers* office in World Trade Center Building 7.
- Salomon was the largest tenant of WTC 7 by far, inhabiting floors 28-45 of the 47 floor building. Salomon also inhabited floors 13-24 albeit with other tenants.
- In April 1998 Weill announced the merger of of *Travelers Group* with *Citicorp* to form *Citigroup*.
- This grand merger required the repeal of key provisions of the 1933 Banking Act, known as the Glass-Steagall Act.
- The Glass-Steagall Act separated commercial banks from investment banks.
- Led by Weill, *Citicorp* and *Travelers* executives lobbied congress for the repealing and subsequent replacement of the Glass Steagall Act.
- Weill recruited former President Gerald Ford and the Jewish Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin to Citigroup's leadership to aid their influence on the US government.
- Their efforts resulted in the removal of restrictions on the banking, insurance, and securities matrix.
- The act was repealed by Clinton and *Citigroup* was born.
- Weill served as CEO of Citigroup from 1998-2003.
- He was also chairman from 1998-2006. After 2006 he became chairman emeritus.
#### Donations and Other Ventures
- Weill and his wife through their foundation are among the largest donors to Cornell University.
- Their donations have totaled over $600 million since 1998.
- Weill, a Cornell alum himself, helped foster the partnership between Cornell and Israel's [[Technion]].
- The Technion is among the most prestigious universities in Israel.
- Weill was awarded an honorary degree from the Technion.
- Weill is among the largest donors to the University of California San Francisco.
- Weill had contributed over $400 million since 2016.
- In 2011 Weill donated $10 million to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel. *Rambam is another name for Maimonides, a prolific 12th century talmudic rabbi. *
- Weill and his wife were given the Rambam Award in 2012 for their contribution.
- In 2000 Weill and his wife co-chaired the [[Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS)]] dinner honoring Jewish Verizon president [[Ivan Seidenberg]].
- The dinner was held to gift Seidenberg the JTS's [[Louis Marshall]] Award.
- Weill and his wife co-chaired the JTS dinner from 2000-2010.
- Weill himself was the fifth recipient of the Louis Marshall Award in 1993.
- Weill has donated to a number of politicians including Hillary Clinton, and [[Mitt Romney]], though he mostly donated to Democrat politicians.
- Weill also donated to the Citigroup Political Action Committee which has donated to many more politicians like: Chuck Schumer, [[Joe Lieberman]], Mitch McConnell, etc.
- In 2008 Weill was named as a co-chair of the US State Department public-private initiative "U.S Palestinian Partnership."
- Weill was listed as a co-chair with [[Lester Crown]] and Walter Isaacson among others. *Walter Isaacson is CEO of the Aspen Institute and a very well known author.*
