2025-10-30 11:17:PM <br/> Tags: #people #EarlyZionism #Yishuv ![[image-160.png|305x377]] # Arthur Ruppin (1876-1943) - Arthur Ruppin was a prominent early Zionist leader. - Ruppin was born in Prussia (modern day Poland). ---- - Ruppin joined the [[World Zionist Organization]] in 1905 - In 1907, Ruppin was sent to Palestine to survey the economic and social condition of the [[Yishuv]]. - Ruppin was sent on behalf of the WZO. - Ruppin created a critical report, noting poor conditions. - Ruppin was then sent to Palestine to found the Eretz-Yisrael Office (Palestine Office) - The Palestine Office was the first permanent governing office in Palestine of the Zionist movement. - The Palestine Office became the [[Zionist Commission]] in 1918. - The Zionist Commission became the [[Palestine Zionist Executive]] in 1921. - The Palestine Zionist Executive became the [[Jewish Agency]] in 1929. - In 1914, (Jewish) U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, [[Henry Morgenthau Sr.]], organized an emergency infusion of $50,000 for the Jews in Palestine after witnessing their poor condition. - The money came from [[Louis Marshall]] and [[Jacob Schiff]], two American Jewish leaders. - The money went to Ruppin to use in Palestine. - Ruppin kept in touch with his American benefactors writing: "the sending of this money has created ... a deep impression [on the Jews of Palestine]." - This contribution was the catalyst for the formation of the [[American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)]]. - Ruppin strongly backed the kvutzot and moshavim as the most economically viable settlement strategy. - Kvutzot and moshavim are socialist village-like communal agricultural settlements. - The kvutzot later transitioned into the well known Israeli kibbutzim. - Ruppin was a major force in Zionist land acquisition in the 1910s, buying significant land in modern day Tel-Aviv, Jerusalem, Jezreel Valley, etc. - In 1913, [[Chaim Weizmann]] tasked Ruppin with finding a site for a Jewish university. - Ruppin found a site on Jerusalem's Mount Scopus. - The site's purchase was financed by Russian Zionist Jew [[Isaac Leib Goldberg]]. - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was built on the site, opening in 1925. - During WWI Ruppin left Palestine, returning in 1920 with the aid of his close associate [[Chaim Weizmann]]. ---- - Ruppin believed American Jews are uniquely positioned to finance the Zionist project. - He was skeptical of American Jewish reliability, stating, "Only the American Zionists might be able to raise it, but the key to the American coffers has not yet been found." - Ruppin was involved in sending Zionist Jewish delegation to the US to raise money for the Zionist project. - Ruppin questioned the ability of American Jews to resist assimilation, given their economic prosperity, - In 1933, Ruppin was elected chairman of the [[Jewish Agency]] executive. - The Jewish Agency was the governing body of the [[Yishuv]] from 1929. - Ruppin was chairman from 1933-1935. - In a 1938 meeting with [[Jewish National Fund]] chair [[Menachem Ussishkin]], Ruppin stated: "I don’t believe in the transfer of individuals. I believe in the transfer of entire villages." *Regarding the routine displacement of Arabs by the Jews in Palestine.* --- - Ruppin was a strong believer in Jewish racial purity. - Ruppin did not believe Yemeni or Ethiopian Jews should be allowed to populate Israel. - In 1933, Ruppin reported in his diary of a meeting he had with Hans K. Guenther in Jena Germany. - Guenther was among the top Nazi thinkers who formed the National Socialist racial theory. - During their two hour meeting, Guenther "was very kind"; "agreed with me that the Jews were not inferior but different and that the Jewish question should be dealt with in respectable manner."
