# Israel Zangwill (1864-1926)
- Zangwill, a British Jew playwright and early Zionist was a close ally to [[Theodor Herzl]].
<br/>
- He led the [[Jewish Territorial Organization (ITO)]] in search of a land to settle the Jewish people other than Palestine.
- The term "melting pot" was popularized by Zangwill's 1908 play *The Melting Pot*.
- Cultural assimilation and racial erasure stems largely from Jewish influence, of which Zangwill is one of the first meaningful examples.
- The melting pot is defined by a destruction of racial, religious, and cultural distinctions within a nation.
- It is important to remember, the "melting pot" is not applicable to Jews, they want nothing to do with assimilation, or losing their Jewishness.
- Zangwill was married to Edith Ayrton, a prominent women's suffrage activist along with her step mother.
- Like racial assimilation, Jewish influence has a strong presence in the history of feminism throughout the 20th century.
