# Menachem Ussishkin (1863-1941)
- Menachem Ussishkin was an early Zionist involved in the first Zionist Congress of 1897.
- Ussishkin was a Jewish delegate to the Paris Peace Conference, the set of diplomatic meetings resulting in punishment of Germany in the Treaty of Versailles.
- The Treaty of Versailles was a major precursor to events in Germany in the 20s, 30s, & 40s.
- Ussishkin moved to Palestine in 1919 and began organizing the agricultural settlements in the [[Yishuv]].
- Ussishkin was influential in acquiring land in Palestine and subsequently immigrating Jews to populate the land.
- *Much of pre-statehood Israel can be defined in a concise sentence: A rush to bring as many Jews to Palestine by any means, legal or not, violent or not.*
- Ussishkin was the head of the [[Jewish National Fund]] from 1923 until his death 18 years later in 1941.
- Created at the fifth World Zionist Congress under the auspices of the [[World Zionist Organization]], the JNF initially served to purchase land in Ottoman and then British controlled Palestine.
